Ivan’s Birthday – Let’s go to Maubara!!!
Dive Maubara yes please!!! So on the 10th of May it was a very special day for Dreamers Dive Academy owner Ivan because it was his birthday! How do dive shop owners celebrate getting a year older you may ask…. DIVING of course!
Diving is what we do after all but we wanted to do something a litte different, especially as it was also the first day of Kate’s parents visit. We planned a 2 dive day west of Dili to a dive site called Maubara. Followed was a dive site we had only explored once. Due to the extensive number of garden eels in the sand on both sides of the reef we decided to name it: Garden Eel city.
The Maubera site
Both sites have an easy sandy beach entry. Maubera is a beautifully extensive reef with so many colourful corals. We saw many different trevallies including blue fin and some really giant Giant Trevally. There were many clams and nudibranchs too. We had a little bit of current but nothing to disturb us. After a wonderful 60 mins we exited. Drove a little way back east to enjoy a picnic lunch in front of Maubara fort.
The New site
Unsure if we can trully officalise the name of this new site but Dreamers Dive Academy had named it Garden Eel City. There are hundreds of these guys in the sand as you enter. The site starts with a sandy bottom and as you head west you reach a lovely reef. Before and after this reef are sandy patches full of garden eels.
The reef itself is full of soft and hard corals and we were evewn lucky enough to see a stone fish. in addition we saw a mushroom coral pipefish, loads of nudibranchs, many species of anemonefish and a few Kuhl’s stingrays.
Happy Birthday
We were happy to share some great dives with Ivan on his special day and wish him a very happy birthday. We love diving!!
